Ecommerce, or electronic commerce, is a term used to describe the buying and selling of goods or services over computer networks, primarily the Internet. Ecommerce applications include online shopping websites, electronic catalogues and business-to-business commerce.
The most common type of e-commerce is retail e-commerce, which allows customers to browse products and make purchases from a merchant’s website using the Internet. The product information is stored in the merchant’s database and sent to the customer’s web browser in real-time.
Retail e-commerce can be divided into two categories: B2C (business-to-consumer) and B2B (business-to-business). In B2C retail e-commerce, shoppers buy goods from a company that sells them directly to consumers. In B2B retail e-commerce, businesses buy goods from other businesses that sell them directly to other businesses (not consumers).
Companies use consumer data to make more informed decisions about the products they offer and how they sell them. For example, a retailer might use data on consumer spending history to recommend other products or services that a customer might be interested in based on past purchases.
